J. Tracksler bravely tackles the issue of mercy killing and death with dignity in her award-winning novel The Ice Floe. This poignant mystery begins with a confession. The narrator killed her grandfather when she was only thirteen; she admits she went on to kill others.

Mallory’s grandfather had suffered a stroke and asked her to assist him in dying with dignity. Mallory and Randy began to work together in their killings. They had criteria that had to be met. He calls himself Dr. Death, and she becomes The Eskimo. Later a third joined the group. Greg calls himself The Candyman. A serial killer is on the loose, and he murdered Mallory’s husband.

From the moment I began to read The Ice Floe, I was hooked. I read into the night, unable to put the book down. J. Tracksler has a unique style of writing. The plot has a steady flow, leading the reader on a journey through the mind of a mercy killer. The Ice Floe left me pondering questions. Is a mercy killing a murder? Is a mercy killer any different from a serial murderer? Is murder an addiction? The Ice Floe is excellent reading.
