The best way to teach ideas to a child is through a story with a good moral. Vanessa Canevaro helps us with the creative I Want a Dragon. In this story, we meet Mary May, a girl who has everything but who wants more, to the point of asking for a dragon for her birthday. We also meet Robbie Baker, a friend of Mary's who was invited to the birthday party. Robbie knows that getting a dragon is no easy task. But he wants to make his friend happy and decides to find a dragon for her. Robbie is a very kind boy who listens to others, has a positive attitude, and follows all the advice that adults give him. The story is short and direct, with a clear message to be interpreted by children.
It is a pleasure to be able to find stories like I Want a Dragon. The story is about friendship, and Robbie is a good example for young readers. I liked the originality of Vanessa Canevaro in creating an environment that mixes a modern world with fairy tale elements. She keeps the format of a classic story because in the illustrations we see current articles and also mysterious-looking objects. The images also help readers to understand the situation of the characters. So, we are able to see the story in the way that Vanessa Canevaro wants, with fun and mystery always present. I Want a Dragon is interesting and keeps us guessing about how to find a dragon, giving us a very rewarding ending.
