I Love My Teacher’s Guts! by Dr. Paul McNamara is a surprising tale about a young student taking a journey through her teacher’s insides. A science experiment that goes wrong shrinks the eagerly observing Sally into a microscopic form of herself. She enters Mrs. Trump through her nose and so begins her journey. She narrates all her findings, including all parts of the anatomy and her reaction to each of them, for example, the blood vessels getting in her way. After her initial reaction and response, she pauses to explain the function of each of the body parts. McNamara ensures that as a teaching mechanism, the story includes details about the heart, lungs, small and large intestines, stomach, liver, and kidneys.
Dr. Paul McNamara uses his story-telling technique to great effect in I Love My Teacher's Guts! Sally’s bursts of dialogue or thinking aloud are delightful. “That was a tight squeeze,” thought Sally traveling through the intestine, and, “Mrs. Trump’s body thinks I’m the coronavirus! I have to get out of here,” in response to the blood vessels resisting her passage. The illustrations are uncomplicated, yet effective, and help the reader imagine what is going on for Sally. McNamara ends the story with revision and questions the reader’s ability to identify the various body parts. The story works as a teacher’s aid and makes learning about anatomy palatable, as ironic as that may sound, as it is all pretty gross, particularly when Sally makes her exit along with Mrs. Trump’s excrement. McNamara has done an excellent job and children will love it.
