Two boys and a young woman are being chased by government agents in the riveting adventure novel, Hollis Whittaker by CB Shanahan. Hollis is an ordinary ten-year-old. He likes to read comics, ride his bike, and play in the woods near his home. One day, while playing by his creek, Hollis discovers an unusual metal disc. Enamored with it, Hollis considers it his lucky charm and keeps it in his pocket. Shortly after finding his lucky piece, Hollis's world goes from ordinary to extraordinary. Now Hollis understands math and astrology on a cosmic level and gains national notoriety. Sadly, Hollis soon finds that fame has a high price when two alleged government agents attempt to kill him. Unexpectedly, a young woman intervenes and whisks Hollis and his best friend Kirby away. Being pursued by the presumed government assailants, the three fugitives run for their lives. With professional killers stalking them and nowhere to hide, can they outsmart their hunters? Will Hollis and Kirby ever see their families again?
The present-day and World War II-era are cleverly combined in the suspenseful novel, Hollis Whittaker by CB Shanahan. Adventure and science merge with a hint of the paranormal in creating this fabulous story. Even though the plot moves between parallel time and space, the continuity of the storyline remains intact. It has a superb story arc that builds to a climactic and intriguing finale. The anticipation of what is going to happen next and the anxiety of how the characters are going to outwit their predators keeps the intensity of the story alive. This is an exciting novel that will appeal to those who love out of the ordinary adventures with ordinary heroes. As there are some mature threads within the story, it is probably more suitable for twelve-year-olds and older.
