A peaceful family gathering is disturbed by activity in the woods. The unique thing is that a family of Sasquatch is the focal point of Hidden Tribe by Scott Harper. Alexia is a researcher trying to find evidence of the existence of the elusive creatures. She encounters Dane, who also wants to protect what he calls the Forest Gods from encroachment and harm, but for more mystical reasons. The forest becomes more crowded as Iktomi, the male, keeps these humans under observation to ensure the safety of his mate and young ones. Heath, a hunter who feels that the only way to prove the Sasquatch exist is to dump a corpse at the feet of the scientists, encounters hunters who have become lost, along with a young woman who has hurt herself and gotten separated from her camp. Feeling threatened, Toylona, the female of the family, takes steps to protect her mate. The night brings a stand-off where anything could happen. Will the presence of this hidden tribe be compromised or will violence bring about a different ending?
Unique and thoroughly entertaining, Hidden Tribe by Scott Harper tells the story of the hunt for Sasquatch from the point of view of these legendary creatures. This is not science fiction, though, because of the human qualities ascribed to Iktomi and his mate and their thoughtful approach to dealing with the presence of people they tend to avoid. Self-preservation, on the part of the Sasquatch as well as the lost hunters, is a key theme as is the right to protect oneself from aggression.
Nicely done and quite interesting! I especially liked the inclusion of the author's first-hand accounts. The anthropological approach used by the author to explain the actions and behavior of the humans makes interesting reading and the dedication of the conservationists to preserving the species certainly provides food for thought. Another bonus is the first-person encounter related by the author that provides some of the details used to create the story. This is definitely worth reading for Sasquatch enthusiasts or anyone interested in a novel adventure tale.
