Carolyn Hamilton first saw Cork Proctor in 1980, at a comedy roast for a local Las Vegas notable. After the show, he invited her to his show the following evening at the Royal Inn. She was intrigued by this charming comedian. When she arrived, there was no show, as it was a Monday night. This incident illustrates many aspects of their decades-long relationship. Their next encounter was seven years later after he left her a message on her answering machine. In the nonfictional work, Help! I Married a Comedian: A memoir of life in the circus lane of marriage to a stand-up comedian, penned by Carolyn V. Hamilton, their relationship with all its ups and downs is chronicled. It includes many fun-filled travel adventures throughout the world, as well as living on a Las Vegas ranch and in a condominium in Ecuador. And the Peace Corps stint in South America adds another element of excitement and anguish.
Carolyn V. Hamilton has provided a wonderful balance of loving as well as heartbreaking moments. Her portrayal of a comedian whose edgy jokes often border on cruelty is simply fascinating. How his derogatory comments eventually wore her down over the years, leading to divorce, is a case study of verbal and emotional abuse. Yet, she was always able to identify and appreciate his better qualities. The inside view of working in Las Vegas, in clubs in other locales and on cruise ships is also eye-opening. Author, ex-wife and companion, Carolyn V. Hamilton has skillfully crafted Help! I Married a Comedian: A memoir of life in the circus lane of marriage to a stand-up comedian. This memoir is unlike any other – a compelling read.
