Hear Me: Breaking the Rules Series, Book 2 is a coming of age novel for preteens and young adults written by Heather Hobbs. Hannah was not looking forward to her last year at Acadia Elementary. She knew that the judge’s sentencing decision on Brady’s trial last spring was due any day now, and she dreaded the inevitable confrontations with Brady and his gang. Hannah and Trudy had both testified at the trial where Brady had been charged with his assault on Hannah’s best friend, Chip, who had been hospitalized after the attack. Brady was a bully at best, but now with vengeance on his mind, Hannah couldn’t begin to fathom what was on the cards for this year. Eighth grade started much the same as the previous years, except the new kids looked a lot smaller. She and Chip had the same home room, math and physical education classes, but then Brady’s plans for vengeance began to take shape.
Heather Hobbs’s social issues novel for preteens and young adults, Hear Me: Breaking the Rules Series, Book 2, eloquently addresses the stresses and strains kids find themselves under while navigating the social structures of school. While this is the second book in Hobbs’ series, the author gave enough background information for me to enjoy this book on its own. How does one cope with a bully -- especially when it seems that the principal, police and the town seem to be bought and sold by that bully’s father? Hannah, who just wants to be left alone and unnoticed, finds her inner warrior in this uplifting and inspirational coming of age story. Hobbs also addresses domestic abuse in this story, as Hannah and others gain some sad insights into Brady’s life and the physical and emotional abuse inflicted on him by his father. Hear Me: Breaking the Rules Series, Book 2 is most highly recommended.
