Harold Phibbs The Trumpeted Fan: A Dark, Romantic Sports Comedy by Miss Fen W. Gamp is a novel many sports fanatics’ wives would find hilarious. Harold doesn’t just love ice hockey; he dreams about it, breathes it, lives it. As a die-hard Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he went crazy when the National Hockey League went on strike. His obsession was putting a wedge between him and his wife, Marilyn. Harold has a poor reputation for his anger issues and has been kicked out of all the arenas. Blowing the national anthem on his trumpet in the middle of the night has his neighbors complaining to the police. Can Marilyn put up with his bizarre behavior any longer? How far will Harold’s addiction take him?
Harold Phibbs's ice hockey addiction took control of every aspect of his life. Miss Fen W. Gamp took Harold Phibbs to a level of sports obsession that I hope is only fictional. Ice hockey brought Harold and Marilyn together, but keeping the romance alive takes work that Harold often forgets to do. Harold Phibbs The Trumpeted Fan came about as the author observed sports fans in Canada, and she took time building her characters while observing and fantasizing. The author keeps the story moving quickly from one of Harold’s crazy stunts to another. The characters come alive as you see their love and struggles with each other, then twist to a new level of fantasy. Overall, I could see glimpses of sports extremists, which are always funny to watch.
