Codex is the second novel in The Serpents of Caesar series by author T. R. Burgess. Set in first-century Rome, the story has themes of political intrigue, treachery, and espionage. The story follows Verendus, an elite Praetorian Guard officer, who becomes a fugitive after being accused of treason for attempting to safeguard a mysterious codex. With the ruthless Caesar’s Serpents in relentless pursuit, Verendus turns to Corinna to help him decipher the ancient text. However, she is a fugitive handmaid with her own hidden motives that might not be good for Verendus. As conspiracies tighten around him and the empire teeters on the edge of chaos, Verendus must uncover the codex’s secrets before both time and his luck run out. With danger dogging his footsteps, can Verendus make it out alive?

Author T. R. Burgess's compelling historical thriller is filled with action, suspense, and political machinations. I loved how the author created the Roman setting that is richly detailed, immersing readers in a world where loyalty is fragile, and danger lurks in every shadow. Verendus is a compelling protagonist. He is skilled yet vulnerable. I loved that he was navigating a dangerous political landscape with both physical strength and sharp intellect. Corinna adds complexity to the narrative; her shifting loyalties keep readers on edge and I was entertained until the end. The pace is fast, and the well-executed twists and intense action sequences propel the story forward and keep the reader hooked to the story. Codex is a thrilling read, perfect for fans of historical fiction, political intrigue, and action-packed adventure. I enjoyed it thoroughly and highly recommend it!
