Grunts, Gramps, and Tanks: A Soldier's Tales by Rick Bogdan spans many years of the main character's time in the army. Following the life of a man named Tyler Willett, we see his surprise choice to enlist, the struggles his marriage went through as a result, and some of the memories surrounding his son. This story captures both the fears and tears associated with military life, but make no mistake, there is a great deal of triumph in this tale as well. We see the personal developments of Willett and his family and see him mature from a junior corporate executive to an experienced tank company commander.
Grunts, Gramps, and Tanks is narrated by Rick Bogdan. I found the author's narration to be pretty high level and enjoyed the story he was able to tell through his own voice. I found myself tracking the story easily and imagine other listeners would too. This isn’t my usual genre of book choice, yet I really enjoyed it straight through. It is written in such a way that readers will slowly become invested in Willett's story and before they know it, they’re fully engaged in the action and storytelling of the narrative. As a finely written and spoken book, I would recommend Grunts, Gramps, and Tanks to readers that are looking for a good personal story, or those who have a special interest in military life. Thanks to Rick Bogdan for giving me a chance to listen to this book. The high level of work and effort that was involved is apparent.
