Wilbur and Ellie Weiss are the ghosts in Ghosts of Windsor Pass by John M. Patrick. The two elderly Holocaust survivors return to haunt their own house after being killed in a hit and run accident one snowy New Year’s Eve. While driving in that same snowstorm, Andy Janzen - together with his wife, Marisa, and two friends, Hank and Cindy - accidentally bumps the Weiss’s car, causing it to leave the roadway. The four friends, finding the elderly couple dead in their car, make the decision to leave the scene without reporting it. That decision angers the spirits of Wilbur and Ellie Weiss. When Andy and Marisa buy the Weiss house, the ghosts decide to get even for being left by the roadside. During the first months in their new house, a gypsy woman across the street warns Andy, Marisa, and their son, Cory, about the haunting. Cory and his friend, Carrie, see the ghosts many times and tell the adults.
John M. Patrick spins a good ghost story in Ghosts of Windsor Pass. I enjoyed that the kids saw the apparitions when the parents rarely did. Despite strange things happening, some of them dangerous, none of the adults takes things seriously. For the adults, there were no such things as ghosts and the children were imagining things. All the strange things that happened were just mysteries to be solved and could not be paranormal. Maria Cummings, the neighbor who tries to warn them, is a great character who can talk to the dead. She is the crazy lady that every neighborhood seems to have. Ghosts of Windsor Pass is a fun read.
