Faux Friends by best-selling author A. J. McCarthy is a crime thriller. Chantal Pouliot is a homicide detective in the city of Quebec. However, due to her trauma from a previous botched case six months ago, she was relegated to desk duty. She yearns for fieldwork, as that’s when she’s in her element. Chantal is instead put on a white-collar case involving plain old fraud. Chantal believes this case will be as interesting as watching paint dry. Nine days after being assigned the case, however, an attempt is made on her life, and she barely manages to survive a car bomb detonation. From there, things only become even more dangerous, and she realizes this is no longer just some white-collar case.

Faux Friends was a great read for me. The plot was well written and kept me hooked and guessing for its entire duration. Being able to analyze the clues and evidence alongside the characters was also a joy for me, as I got to play detective. The plot is one of the best in the crime genre that I’ve ever read. A. J. McCarthy really did a stellar job of weaving everything together. The characters were also lifelike, organic, and well-written. The pacing was another huge positive as it doesn’t get any better than this. The urgency of a dire situation was conveyed well, and everything was slowed down beautifully for the more intimate and light-hearted moments. All in all, I’m glad I read Faux Friends, and I’d recommended that lovers of books from the crime and thriller genre give this one a shot. You won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to Chantal's next case!
