Fake It: The Keswick Chronicles, Book 1 is a young adult/new adult romantic coming of age novel written by Victoria Kinnaird. Jack Daveyson is the kind of kid most people in school don't really have much to do with. He's the kid dressed in black with hair covering much of his face. While his dad's music store is a big thing in the small town of Wayville, where Jack lives with his aunt Rose and his dad, when his dad is not touring with a group, Jack’s not at all in with the popular crowd -- nor would he want to be. It's the first day of his senior year in high school and Jack's got some plans. He figures it's time to finally get his band together, and he's working up the courage to tell his dad that college is not his top priority at this point in time. He'd like to have a bit more courage in dealing with his dad, who's been away more than at home since his wife died, leaving him with a confused eight-year-old son. Oh, and yes, Jack wouldn't mind a bit of romance this year. Not that it would be very easy for him to find that. He's the only out and proud gay student at his school.
Victoria Kinnaird's young adult and new adult gay romance novel, Fake It: The Keswick Chronicles, Book 1, is a marvelous coming of age novel that throws together two young men who seem, at first glance, to be about as opposite as two people could be. Watching as they come together is a real treat. I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite character in Fake It -- they're all grand, complex and believable characters, from Jack's best friend, Jess, the science geek and bass guitar maven, to Aunt Rose and Daniel Daveyson, Jack's father. But, I will say that Jack and JJ are two of the most compelling main characters I've encountered, and their on-again, off-again romance is sweet, tender and a joy to behold.
There's also the music. Music plays on every page of Fake It, and it's a grand thing indeed. Kinnaird had me revisiting open houses where garage bands played their hearts out and battles of the bands, and those endless afternoons spent dreaming of making it big. I found myself deliberately taking my time reading this book as I was having too much fun reading it, and I didn't want it to end. But, of course, it did, so I'm eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series. Fake It: The Keswick Chronicles, Book 1 is a monumentally good coming of age novel and it's most highly recommended.
