Dr. Rosie Helps the Animals by Jennifer Welborn tells us a story about Rosie, the daughter of a veterinarian, and how she uses what she learned from her mom to help animals. With the knowledge of natural remedies, Rosie goes on an adventure helping all sorts of animals, from rabbits and pigs to giraffes and even a beluga whale. The natural remedies included aloe, saltwater, tea with honey, and a hot-cold compress. The illustrations accompanying the story are just adorable and kids can see how Rosie helps each animal.
In this story, Rosie applied her knowledge of natural remedies through her related experience with colds, tummy aches, and even a skinned knee. I am sure that growing up, you would know what to do if you ever got sick. These remedies might have been passed down to you from your mom. The story was well-paced, and we can see what an influence her mom’s career had on her. She developed an interest in what she does and asked questions whenever she could. I also loved how this encourages one’s imagination. The inspiration behind Dr. Rosie Helps the Animals makes it more beautiful. Jennifer Welborn was inspired by the case of a baby giraffe that was treated by a veterinary medical clinic with great success. She also did her research with regard to the remedies and cases of the animals depicted in the book. This was really informative and a story that I think children would love!
