Disappearing Footprints: A Shirley Brown Mystery by Barbara J Gipson is a mystery/ghost story for young adults. Shirley Brown has always been different from other kids. When she starts getting bullied, her parents decide to move to Oklahoma. Soon she starts having a recurring dream about playing “Disappearing Footprints” with her best friend Phyllis, who still lives in California. She is not sure what the dream means, but soon finds out.
I have always loved reading mysteries and ghost stories. Disappearing Footprints: A Shirley Brown Mystery combines both. In this story, Gipson introduces young Shirley Brown. Shirley’s parents are trying to protect her from something. Her Grandma is the only one who keeps trying to tell her things. At first I was not sure what to make of Shirley’s visions. It is not until the middle of the book that Gipson explains what is really going on with Shirley. After that I thought the story moved at an extremely fast pace. Gipson does answer all the questions readers may ask, but she does it rather quickly.
The game “Disappearing Footprints” actually sounds fun to me and I would like to try it out with my daughter. I think this is a good book for young adults or anyone who likes mysteries. As the first book in the Shirley Brown Mystery Series, it definitely made me want to read the next one in the series.
