Army Colonel Zack Kelly and his friend and co-worker Blake Lannigan decide to travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for a short break. Blake believes there is more to Gettysburg than meets the eye and runs onto the battlefield at Devil's Den to look for ghosts. In moments she disappears. Zack, with three tours in Afghanistan, now suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. He has no memory of what happened to Blake; he only remembers hoof beats and other noises. Zack immediately becomes the FBI's number one suspect in Blake’s disappearance. But, he is not alone when Irish medium Shelia O'Donnell, and his partner on the President's National Security Advisor's Task Force, Lieutenant Colonel Rene Garcia, are determined to solve the mystery. The search intensifies for Blake where in Washington D.C. an Irish Mafia assassin attempts to kill him. Does this assassination attempt really have something to do with Blake’s disappearance, or is it something more? Zack and Shelia head for Galway, Ireland, to determine why there is a contract on his life; then must head back to Washington to unravel a mysterious Irish connection to all of this, before it is too late.
"Devil’s Den" is a nice simple mystery and even with some violence I would still consider it in the cozy mystery genre. The idea for the plot is sound and the characters are well-defined. The plot takes a complete twist toward the end that really grabs the reader. Overall, a very nice read.
