Death on the Moon by Jeanne Maree Iacono is a fascinating fusion of sci-fi and crime fiction. The story unfolds in 2030 at the Headquarters of Barish International in Los Angeles. Barish International owns the Lunar Base Camp on the moon. NASA’s contract with Barish International for exploring the moon is due for renewal. Still, the owner of Barish International is worried about management problems at the Lunar Base Camp that may raise concerns with NASA and jeopardize the contract renewal. Robin Mulvaina, a private detective, is hired by Barish International to “immediately, thoroughly, and confidentially” investigate the problems. Just before Mulvaina takes the first shuttle to the moon, a manager working at the Lunar Base Camp is found dead in the Earth-bound shuttle. What will Mulvaina discover?

Pun intended, I loved Death on the Moon by Jeanne Maree Iacono to the moon and back. The excursions to the moon with Robin Mulvaina to investigate what was happening at the Lunar Base Camp were breathtaking. And I enjoyed the story even more when, after shadowing Mulvaina and analyzing all clues he was discovering, I was outwitted and surprised by the most unexpected climax! I was also impressed by the deft combination of the intricate plot, the suspense permeating the surprising turns of events, the relatable and philosophical portrayal of travels to the moon, life at the Lunar Base Camp, and the moon exploration technologies. But most of all, I was impressed by the thought-provoking recycling of the old mantelpiece clock. I highly recommend this fascinating story to sci-fi, adventure, murder mystery, and crime fiction fans.
