“Thank you for protecting me from dangers I know not of, and for shielding me from all that could have been.” Author Patrice Lee reinforces this mantra throughout her collection of inspirational words between fathers and their children. In a perfect world, every child would realize this lesson and be blessed with open communications between them and their parents. It is unfortunate that far too many children do not know the security of parents who are truly present in their lives. More than once I was brought to tears while reading this lovely resource that is directed toward (but not limited to) the male parent. Written simply and sincerely, Lee combines poetry, short dialogues, and Bible scripture to provide a guide book for all situations from adoption to death.
Daddy!...Can You Hear Me? enforces the importance of parental communication as a teacher, a promise-keeper, and role model. The statistics given at the end of the volume are eye-opening. Patrice Lee states: “The stats are more than facts…a sad reality for some,” in regard to a child reared without a father. The objective is to strive toward communication, regardless of the physical existence of both parents in the family unit. The organizational questionnaire included as an afterword is a valuable tool for anyone who needs to reevaluate their relationship with their children or children with whom they play an active role. This may be only 96 pages, but within these pages Patrice Lee establishes herself as an architect of building a child’s character through words. Thank you, Ms. Lee, for this much needed reminder of the importance of the father figure in the life of a child.
