Calliope Jones and The Last World Diver by Haylie Machado Hanson is a young adult general fantasy novel that would appeal most to an audience made up primarily of young adult females who enjoy female heroes and magical worlds. Calliope Jones is the sixteen-year-old middle child in her family, who spends her time babysitting, acting as the peace keeper, and surfing the California waters, all while also attending high school. Calliope’s ordinary life is forever altered when a glowing object washes up in the surf and she discovers that she is not the ordinary girl that she thought she was. Will Calliope have the strength to navigate other worlds, survive the Shadowmancers, and protect those that she cares about or will she refuse her destiny and suffer for it?
Calliope Jones and The Last World Diver by Haylie Machado Hanson was an enjoyable, adventure filled story that I honestly loved reading. I liked how the author started the story with the Jones family during summer vacation with Mom trying to get Joe to his senior pictures, Calliope being forced out of bed to babysit the younger siblings, and then the arguing about the plans for the day. It just gave the feeling of a normal family and allowed me to get a feel for the different characters without a long, drawn out background explanation. Calliope was easily my favorite character because I felt that I could understand her and her feeling about having to play peacemaker, and being always asked not to argue and to do as she was told. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and its adventure and fantasy elements, and I would love to read more about Calliope in the future!
