Called: The Making & Unmaking of a Nun by Marge Rogers Barrett is a memoir that explores one woman’s journey of faith, of love, and service. We are introduced to the protagonist at a very early age in her life, as a pupil in a school where the Monsignor, after his visit, would ask the class about what they wanted to be when they grew up, his face beaming with a smile. Marge states that she never lifted her hand up, because hers was the only sour face in the class. The memoir chronicles her life, exploring her family background, her youthful exuberance, her struggles, and her vocation to the contemplative life. But her ultimate freedom will come with the choice to become married and look after a family, and to teach others.

This is a beautiful story about vocation and inner freedom, a story that explores the joys and pains, the highs and lows of one woman’s spiritual journey. Marge Rogers Barrett’s memoir is beautifully written and the emotional intensity of her story will have readers following it avidly.
