Boo-Boo the Shih Tzu: Happy Birthday Boo-Boo! is a children's story by Michelle Blanshei about a dog named Boo-Boo who is celebrating his birthday with his family and friends. Boo-Boo loves parties, and his parents putting up decorations sets the tone for all things fun on Boo-Boo's birthday. Boo-Boo has to wait for the party to start before opening his presents, but soon enough, his friends arrive at the party. He has a special bond with his friends, and their relationship builds further. Happy, he makes a wish, eats cake, and then plays with his friends. Later, he opens his gifts and continues to celebrate until the party is over.
The illustrations by Natalia Kravchenko are fabulous with great attention to detail. Michelle Blanshei does an excellent job of immersing readers in Boo-Boo the Shih Tzu's festivities. I felt like I was at Boo-Boo's party as his mother gave him some carrot cake, his favorite! It was adorable to see Boo-Boo's friends bring him gifts. One picture made it simple for me to envision Boo-Boo's tail wagging from side to side. I smiled as I read about Boo-Boo's love of playing games, and how he and his friends played pin the tail on the cat. Michelle then followed it with an illustration showing Boo-Boo with a blindfold. I smiled at the pinata twist, and the last picture was a surprise. The author takes time with the story, which moves at a steady pace.
