Betrayed (Angels of Affection) by Carly Fall is an enjoyable Romance/Sci-Fi/Fantasy fiction story, book one of a series about protagonist Liam, an Australian firefighter who dies on the job. Unfortunately for Liam, his life on Earth has been less than noble. Upon arriving in the afterlife, he is given an assignment to do some good in the world where mankind is out of balance. Paired with another Angel of Affection, a witch who was hanged, Liam and Adele are sent back to Earth as humans to try to turn a police officer’s heart from cold stone. Jeff was cheated on by his wife and abandoned, leaving him angry and mistrustful of others. Liam also has trouble while there in resisting his carnal desires. He sexually harasses Adele, who wants nothing to do with him. It seems as though his focus on his libido is a way to squash his grief for accidentally killing his wife in a car accident. The duo of angels makes some mistakes along the way, but ultimately does their atonement work under the supervision of another angel who acts a bit like their mother. They try to get Jeff back together with his estranged wife, but plans drastically change in the end.
Carly Fall uses her craft as a writer to describe Heaven, where souls are segregated into areas based on the life they led. In Betrayed (Angels of Affection), Fall uses third person to paint a broad view of the various characters lives. The story plot moves along quickly and is a fun, easy read. Interspersed throughout are a few romantic encounters and personal victories for the main characters, all the while leading to a delightful conclusion.
