Benevolent by Erin A Jensen is a supernatural story that follows the life of fifteen-year-old Abigail Perkins and an unexpected moment of grief that changes her life. She is bullied in school and the only comfort she finds is in her friendship with Danny Cobb and the television show, Supernatural. But when she learns that Danny’s cancer is about to take his life, she is overwhelmed with sadness. Unable to visit him for the last time, she goes to bed and cries herself to sleep. But upon waking up, she finds one of the most beloved angels from the show standing at the foot of her bed. It’s a miracle that redefines her perspective on life and gives her the strength to heal and to stand tall in the midst of adversity.
The narrator is the protagonist, now an older woman, and looking back at the events of her life. It’s a novel that explores the effects of a television show on fans and how fantasy can become an ingredient in our recipe for healing our heart and our experiences and a tool for believing. The story opens with a powerful premise—imagine a lonely girl, losing the kindest person she’s ever met and imagine that it wasn’t until third grade that she found her first friend. The emotion is introduced right from the start of the novel and the reader feels a connection with the protagonist. There is a lot to enjoy in this book, but what captivated me most was the gorgeous prose, so descriptive and filled with symbolism and vivid imagery. Benevolent is heartwarming and filled with inspiration, a novel with strong and memorable characters and an unusual message. Erin A Jensen’s work stands out in its originality and beauty.
