In Beneath the Devil's Bow by Sebastian Groff, it is 1907, and Nicholas is on his way to a new life in Europe with his father, David, after his mother has passed away. He charts his discontent through diary entries to the love he left behind in the U.S. As they arrive in their new home, Nicholas begins to experience strange phenomena. These begin with inexplicable smells, sounds and visions. But when Nicholas tries to solve the bizarre incidents, he uncovers a demonic presence that demands control over him. Nicholas is plunged deeper and deeper into a dark world where the line between reality and nightmares becomes blurred. Nicholas must try to escape from this tortured soul, as the situation and games become deadlier.
In Beneath the Devil's Bow, the author has created a chilling story that will keep your attention throughout. The plot is filled with suspense, the paranormal and a little romance. The tension is built throughout as Nicholas tries to rid himself of the entity. The conflict is superb as both Nicholas and the spirit force play a dangerous game of cat and mouse. The dramatic ending was not what I was expecting but suited the story perfectly. If you enjoy a paranormal thriller, then you will find a great example here. The characters were rich and believable and Nicholas made a very strong and likeable protagonist. The scenes were very descriptive and well written, and transported you into the horrific nightmares of Nicholas, especially the vision in the window as Nicholas nurses his father. The story will touch your heart in places but I recommend you read it before the sun sets as it is quite spine-chilling in places too.
