Beneath by Simon James Wood is a crime thriller. The Cartwright family has been brutally murdered in a hotel room, and Detective Andrew Bates is in charge of solving it. Something about the setting tells him there's more to this than meets the eye. Meanwhile, his partner Detective David Radley is desperately trying to finish his last case, and he doesn't need anything else to weigh him down. Radley's sister, a fashion designer called Kathy, has returned after three years and dredged up some painful memories. Somehow, something links the two detectives, Kathy, and the Cartwright family, and finding that link is the key to solving the murder. Can the detectives solve this tough case? And how will they deal with Antony?
Beneath by Simon James Wood is a story with plenty of layers, and it sometimes gets quite dark. It's full of action, with plenty of twists and fast turns to keep you on your toes, holding your attention all the way through. It is quite violent in places, but you would expect that of a story like this. Throughout the plot, hints and clues are dropped but don't expect an easy ride in putting them together; this story is cleverly written, with several sub-plots weaving together as it reaches its climax. It's a complex tale with a lot of well-developed characters, and you'll need your wits about you to keep up with the connections between them – it does all become clear, though. Simon Wood has thoroughly researched this book; the level of detail is second to none. The characters' perspectives and scenes change quickly, but it all adds to the thrill and the suspense. I really enjoyed this story, and I recommend it to anyone who loves crime thrillers and has a few hours to put aside to read it in one go.
