Born in 1832 and dead at the age of 30 in 1862, Arrow has been given the chance to return to earth to protect his reincarnated soul mate, Maria Ridge. From the young age of four years old, Maria’s able to see and hear certain things that other people can’t. Growing up was difficult for her as she lacked the emotional support that she desperately needed from her loved ones. With the help of Riley, Maria’s niece, Arrow protects her from Scarecrow, a dark entity that has been haunting her.
Angels and Arrows by Reyna Hawk weaves fact and fiction into an enthralling paranormal story. Reyna’s author note states that “this book contains actual paranormal events, whether derived from personal experiences or eyewitness accounts”. Factual aspects of Angels and Arrows is what draws me as a fan of the paranormal genre, and Reyna’s clean prose boosts the strength of the story. That said, it is spine-chilling to think that some of the paranormal events are true, so I was careful not to read this book late into the night.
When protecting Maria and her friend Allie in a spirit form is not enough, Arrow takes a rather bold step to be closer to Maria, which I won’t spoil here for the sake of other readers. I was hoping that there was more involvement from Riley, but she’s still a young kid, so it makes sense that she shouldn’t be physically exposed to the mayhem that’s happening to her aunt. Overall, an enjoyable read.
