All Roads Lead to Jerusalem: A Muslim American Woman Looking for Hope and Answers in the West Bank by Jennifer L. Jones is the story of Jenny Jones who moves to the West Bank with her three children from Washington. She realizes that the place is not as safe and easy as she thought it would be for her family. Apart from trying to adjust to the new town, Jenny finds it hard to cope with handling in-laws, servants, nighttime raids, and military round-ups. The book is a journey of a woman trying to find herself and a sense of inner peace which eludes her in both Jerusalem and the United States.
Set against the backdrop of the West Bank, the story exposes the culture of the place, the people, and the traditions. The angst of the author trying to find inner peace and cope with the challenges of living in a new country and adjusting to a new lifestyle has been captured well. The book extensively covers the political situation in the West Bank, the horrors of the nighttime raids and military roundups which spices up the theme.
I enjoyed reading this book. The Holy Land, the 'Castle' where the author lives, the Arabic culture and traditions, food habits and the villages lend a sense of exotic vibe and mystery to the theme. The twist in the author's life changes the pace of the story a bit and gives it a different direction. An excellent autobiography that exposes the readers to life in Israel.
