Young people love the adventure of Halloween: dressing up in costumes, trick or treating, and, of course, all that candy. Alicia loves Halloween. She and her friends are planning to throw a virtual Halloween party, this one taking place in the virtual world they all participate in, TullyTown. They think it’ll be loads of fun and lots of treats. But there’s something evil lurking behind the virtual reality of this make-believe setting, and this evil is threatening Alicia and her friends. As she attempts to reach the next level, her mom calls for some help setting up the Halloween decorations. Finally, back at her game, her best friend reaches out virtually for help. But Alicia is intent on her own success and doesn’t respond immediately to offer assistance. Will the friends find a way out of this virtual miasma?
Derek Fisher’s young people’s novel, Alicia Connected: Tricked With Treats, is an alternate virtual reality mystery. The plot begins with Alicia recklessly playing with her new tablet and perusing the virtual game her friends are all hyped about. TullyTown has multiple levels of success, just like most virtual games. Things in TullyTown start to go from exciting to bizarre and frightening in a very short period, adding to the suspense. Virtual games are not always what they appear, and danger often threatens those who are not tech-savvy enough to recognize the signs. The author has a sound knowledge of high tech and virtual gaming so the story is realistic and believable. Dialogue is well used and helps define each character’s individuality. This is definitely a great read for those into the high-tech gaming experience.
