Adversity Defeated: Turn Your Struggles Into Strengths by Marc Hoberman is the author's memoir detailing the struggles of, well, life in general, but compounded by a battle with epilepsy. Following his mother's debilitating stroke, Hoberman is uprooted during a crucial period in life and is moved from New York to Florida, thrust into a living arrangement he neither wanted nor adapted to easily. The onset of seizures began at the most inopportune time imaginable. "According to Candee, I let go of the steering wheel and my body tightened as I succumbed to the grip of my first seizure. She grabbed the wheel and steered us through the tollbooth."
Adversity Defeated by Marc Hoberman is a wonderful story that reads with the crisp and absorbing prose generally reserved for fiction. Hoberman's voice is strong and witty, creating laughter in scenarios where, if he wasn't sharing his own story himself, might induce guilt to laugh at. Thankfully, the levity Hoberman delivers balances the weight of a complex and challenging tale. This is the first book I've ever read on epilepsy, and I'm afraid it may have ruined me for others. Consumed in a single afternoon, Hoberman's story of taking control of a life that did its level best to control him, cycling through doctors, medications, and circumstances that would crush most, is fantastically inspiring. I'd absolutely recommend Adversity Defeated to anyone who enjoys reading books on perseverance and narratives that animate and illuminate the darkest corners of human health and conflict.
