The disappearance of a happy groom shortly after his wedding brings a dark history to light in the murder mystery, Abra Cadaver (Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series Book 14) by Jerold Last. Soon after her wedding, Sherry phones her old friend Roger, asking for help. Her new husband, Wally, has disappeared and she is concerned that something adverse has happened to him. Upset that the local Sheriff doesn't seem inclined to act, she asks Roger to come and investigate. Roger agrees, bringing Juliet, his German Short Haired Pointer, and her trainer, Bruce, along. Having trained Juliet in searching for cadavers, Bruce and the dog explore the vineyard. The dog discovers a body buried beneath a grapevine. As they continue their investigation, Juliet sniffs out another body in another part of the vineyard. This corpse has been buried for more than a decade. With this discovery, Roger has uncovered an old mystery.
Collaborating with the FBI, Roger and his team work together to protect Sherry, unearth the roots of a generations-old money laundering racket, and find the criminals responsible for Wally's death. Their investigation reveals connections to an infamous syndicate out of the city that dates back twenty years or more, laced with incriminating links to the local law enforcement. While gathering substantial evidence, their team is under siege, and one of them is wounded and hospitalized. Can Roger and his colleagues prove their suspicions before Sherry is the next victim?
Fraud, money laundering, murder, and a connection to organized crime are center stage of an investigation in California's wine country, making Abra Cadaver (Roger and Suzanne Mystery Series Book 14) by Jerold Last an intriguing murder mystery. This being the fourteenth book in a series, the protagonist had a lot of characters revisiting and assisting in his inquiries and research. However, the plot moved along at a fair pace, giving the storyline a nice arc with a touch of excitement entering the picture now and then, giving it life. I believe that if a reader started with the first novel in the series, they would know the characters and be enthralled and completely satisfied with the mystery in this one.
