Abbie Burgess: Courageous Kids (The Lighthouse Lamps Series) is a thoughtful book written by Wanda Kay Knight. It is inspired by the true story of the legendary Abbie Burgess. Once upon a time, Abbie lived with her parents and siblings at the Matinicus Rock Lighthouse. This lighthouse shone lights from its tower to help the sailors at sea have a clearer vision. One day, Abbie’s father left to buy some food, oil, and medicine for her sick mom and family, putting her in charge of the home. A little time after his departure, a heavy storm rocked the island, and everything threatened to fall apart. How will she take care of her sick mom, protect their home from the storm and rain, keep the lights on at the lighthouse, and feed her siblings?
Abbie Burgess is a courageous character, and rightly so. She shows courage and grit in the face of hopelessness and isolation. Wanda Kay Knight aptly told the story in a way that appeals to both adults and children. This book once more reiterated that giving up in the face of challenges is not an option when people depend on us. We must show courage and selflessness when it matters because a single act of ours can save others. I loved the romantic twist to Abbie Burgess: Courageous Kids (The Lighthouse Lamps series) because it gave me something to smile about. The picture quality was exceptional, and I appreciated the grade reading information. Wanda has done a brilliant job, and I’d love an adaptation of this book into a cartoon series.
