Children can sense the excitement when parents are preparing to go to the lake. Pets can, too. Bailey certainly senses the preparations underway. As he and Bella go about their morning rituals, they observe the adults preparing bags of clothing, bags of food, and, yes, dog food, and treats. However, the dog food and treats come last, so Bailey and Bella decide to be extra good. They don’t want to be left behind with a dog-sitter. They want to join the family at the lake. They want to go.
Kristina Wolf Dreisbach’s picture book story, A Tale From a Foxhound Beagle Named Baily: Are We Going To The Lake Yet?, is a fun adventure filled with excitement. The story is told in the first-person narrative from Bailey’s point of view. Bailey and his sister, Bella, both foxhound beagles, are super excited as they watch Mama and Daddy prepare for an outing, hopefully to their favorite place, the lake. Bailey tells the young reader of his building excitement, but also about his concern that he might be left behind if he doesn’t behave. The story encourages friendship between siblings, as Bailey and Bella demonstrate their strong bond of friendship even though they’re siblings.
Each new entry is accompanied by a lovely illustration and an applicable biblical quote, like the importance of being good and obeying one’s parents and, from their friend, Charlie the chipmunk, to take a stand, be alert, and be ready for all the good that is to come. This is a fun read to encourage young people to follow the words from the Bible in all they do, even during the excitement leading up to going to the lake.
