Michael has failed to find a new job once more and his savings are dwindling away. To top it all, it does not take long until even more misery befalls him in A Shadow in the Flames by Michael G. Munz. He is on his way home with his flatmate, Diomedes, and is almost there when the place suddenly blows up. Nothing can be salvaged and, in addition to having no job and hardly any money, Michael now doesn't even have a home. But it all changes when a stranger approaches them. He wants them to find the arsonist and kill him. But first, they need to find the arsonist and they get some help from a rather charming character. Unfortunately, Michael soon finds out that nothing is as it seems.
During the first few chapters of A Shadow in the Flames, I expected the plot to be quite straightforward: almost penniless young man loses home, then hunts down the arsonist with the friend he idolizes and along the way becomes some sort of hero who can then buy himself a new home with the money. But the plot soon became a lot more complicated than that. I liked that you not only get to follow Michael, or Romulus, but also saw what other characters were up to. I didn't really like Diomedes from the start, so I felt quite satisfied about some of the developments. Not everyone is quite what they first appear to be and it is interesting to discover the truth bit by bit. I was definitely quite intrigued by some of the plot points.
The writing is flawless and it is obvious that someone has taken the time to edit and proof read the novel before it was published. Unfortunately, this is not always the case these days, so I always appreciate novels that are free of spelling and grammar mistakes. A Shadow in the Flames is the first book in a series, and after finishing it, you'll definitely want to read the next one in the series, too!
