A New Way to Wealth: The Power of Doing More with Less is the most recent addition to the writings on business, management, and leadership by noted academic, consultant, and environmentalist Dr. Bruce Piasecki. Introduced by Dr. Micah Shippee, the subject is divided into three parts: “Competition This Century,” “Fate Respects Frugality,” and “Near the Future.” Major topics include the concept of true wealth, the meaning and benefits of competitive frugality, avoiding “knuckleheadedness” in business, examples from successful global businesses and leaders, the need for a focus on social impact, and keeping faith in our global future. Quotations and illustrations are located throughout which add to the presentation. Each chapter is followed by a bulleted graphic to summarize the key points. An appendix suggests additional readings.
Dr. Bruce Piasecki describes A New Way to Wealth as his homage to American “Founding Father” Benjamin Franklin. It is that, but it’s so much more. The narrative is crisp, well-organized, logical, common-sense, educational, and utterly inspirational. I enjoyed reading it. Not only was I reminded of many of Franklin’s timeless words of wisdom that I learned as a child but also of the need for a significant realignment in the strategic direction of modern businesses and governments to the frugality, inventiveness, industry, and diplomacy which he urged. As many Americans do, I see the destructive effects on our nation and our world of decades if not centuries of unbalanced materialism and consumerism underpinned by the short-sightedness and greed of business and government leaders. A thought-provoking read. Highly recommended.
