Love and Protest by Nancy Klann-Moren is a poignant historical novel that intertwines the stories of two young women separated by generations. Seventeen-year-old Harper Warner discovers a diary in a thrift shop, chronicling Libby Carlson's personal ‘Summer of Love’ during the Anti-Vietnam War Movement in San Francisco. Inspired by the diary, Harper reflects on her grief over her mother's passing and becomes motivated to join the Black Lives Matter movement. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the George Floyd murder alter her plans, as she navigates her own journey toward activism amid contemporary clashes of culture, politics, and the darker side of human nature.

Author Nancy Klann-Moren skillfully intertwines past and present, creating a powerful narrative that bridges two generations of activism and showcases a whole range of behaviors and ideologies that so often get in the way of us remembering what it is to be loving and humane to one another in this world. The emotional depth and relatability of Harper’s grief and personal growth are beautifully captured, making the novel heartfelt and introspective in ways that a modern reader can immediately connect with. This narrative skill then expands into the past and her connection to Libby with beautiful reported history and realistic engagement through dialogue and thought presentation. Klann-Moren’s vivid portrayal of historical and contemporary social movements provides a rich, thought-provoking backdrop to the characters' journeys that perfectly complements their emotional struggles and is pitched with great pacing to drop us into the next segment of history when we’ve fully processed what came before. Overall, I would certainly recommend Love and Protest as a brilliant read for fans of both contemporary and historical drama alike, with a unique and engaging storytelling format that keeps readers captivated from cover to cover.
