A Heart's Home, A Novella by Laura J. Marshall is a romantic story set against the backdrop of India. Asyra, a British girl, lives in India with her father after the death of her mother. The story deals with the romance of Asyra and Braddock, how they meet each for the first time and fall in love despite having totally different tastes and interests.
The book is intensely romantic. It is not easy to handle a romantic theme because most of them end up in a cliched manner, making it boring. This book, though short, is powerful and the love shared between Asyra and Braddock is expressed very subtly. It's not the usual cliched romance. Her journey with Braddock to meet his brother (with whom her grandmother has fixed an arranged marriage) and then suddenly falling in love with Braddock is unexpected. The theme of the story shifts completely at that point.
A Heart's Home, A Novella has also multiple messages to the reader. It speaks about how a foreigner feels like an outsider in a different country, a woman's belief in God and the path He chooses for her and an innocent love that blooms between the two characters, making it a poignant love story.
The author Laura J.Marshall has added a kind of longing and passion in this short book through her words. Her handling of the two characters is done with depth and finesse. The cultures of India and England blend well with the theme.
