Summer camp! Visions of swimming, fishing, campfires, and new friends. That’s what Brad Finkley thinks when his mother tells him he’s going to summer camp. Worst Summer Camp Ever by Jennifer Waddle has all of those elements, but not in the way Brad thinks. His baby sister continues to bring him new stuffed animals to carry along on his trip. Isn’t that sweet? Not! It contributes to one of his most embarrassing moments. Not because he has the stuffed creature with him, but because he doesn’t have it. His roommates aren’t necessarily ones he would have chosen. What’s that running around the cabin? Mice? This camp is like nothing Brad ever imagined, nor the reader.
Book 2 of the Brad Finkley series, Worst Summer Camp Ever is a funny tale that will have the reader laughing out loud. Jennifer Waddle’s story is geared for the young reluctant reader and often these are boys. The cover itself is a great hook, with the image encouraging the reader to imagine why Brad’s experience is bad. The text addresses the issue of being a reluctant reader and provides humorous scenarios children often encounter. The point that being a reluctant reader doesn’t meant there’s something wrong with you is a great underlying theme. I looked at Book 1 online and particularly like the format that Jennifer Waddle has used in beginning both books in the same manner. What a great way to encourage reluctant readers to attack another book. I highly recommend Worst Summer Camp Ever for anyone looking for a great book for a child ages 9 to 12.
