In the distant future, a spaceship leaves Earth to transport two escapees from certain death under mysterious circumstances. The ship is meant to take them to a colonized planet in the galaxy. Something happens and they are diverted to crash land on a primitive hostile planet instead. The only survivor in the escape pod is a young woman named Jennifer who is wounded. She is found and nursed back to health by a native hunter on the planet and they learn to communicate. His name is Taric. The planet is comparable to Earth from the caveman era, with strange, hostile animals, similar to our own. Jennifer and Taric learn from each other and become a loving couple. Things seem good for a while until we learn more about Jennifer and the real reason she had to escape from Earth in the first place.
Worlds Apart by William L. Frame falls into the category of romance/science fiction; however, it is more a story about survival in a hostile world and the meeting of two different cultures. Worlds Apart gives the reader a love story despite cultural differences. Think copper-skinned Native American for Taric and rich young white girl for Jennifer. They adopt a wild, wolf-like creature who becomes a sort of guard dog and Jennifer learns how to hunt, cook food, make clothes, and Taric learns human ways. The dialogue is cute and funny at times, with a mix of drama and pathos. The second half of the book goes into the hunt for Jennifer by Earth’s factions who are on a mission. There are bad guys, treachery and espionage as well as allies of Jennifer who want to protect her. With enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged, the author uses a narrative the sci-fi fan will like, as well as a romantic element for fans of the genre.
