Kate L. Mary’s World of Blood is a dystopian story broken into two distinct parts. Part one begins with a missionary being killed by the Andaman tribe. When India refused to retrieve his body, the United States sent a special operative troop. While they were digging up his body, a dozen natives attacked the soldiers. Andra noticed one soldier looked ill when he appeared on a talk show. Reports of a deadly virus outbreak in India follow a news report that several soldiers have succumbed to a mysterious illness. The second part occurs several months later when they have no power, water, or internet. Olivia becomes hateful when her mother refuses to leave the house to get her best friend. Andra and Sean risk going out to a pharmacy for medication but what they find is far worse than they could ever imagine.
Katie L. Mary uses Andra’s point of view as a dystopian author to reveal the events that led to preparing for the pandemic. Andra’s writing was a strength and a weakness when she watched social media posts. The scientific approach to several events caused several unpredictable twists. I felt chills with the feeling of eeriness generated by the atmosphere’s vivid details. I agreed with Andra’s suspicions about Quinn’s presence after he was evasive when answering questions. The behavior of each character was understandable and realistic. For example, Olivia was a moody teenager who lashed out because she couldn’t control her life during lockdown. I couldn’t pry myself from the book when I read about the effects of the virus. World of Blood’s suspense builds in intensity from start to finish and the cliffhanger ending leaves a variety of scenarios for the sequel that I am eager to read.
