As religions and the belief in the One God take a firm hold on humanity, magic became obscure and the Old Gods fell into a restless slumber, waiting for the opportunity to dominate humans again. Now, with the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, magic is finally returning and the Old Gods are awakening, seeking humans’ sacrifice and obedience once more. To battle this threat, a mysterious old man named Alexander brings together a group of reincarnated souls who have fought side by side for millennia. D.A. Graystone’s series, Witches of Aquarius, introduces readers to the gritty world of magic with Book I, Breath of Life.
What drew me to Witches of Aquarius is, of course, the magic. Who can resist a superb and edgy magic-themed story? And Breath of Life is a commendable debut for this series. Mr. Graystone does a great job with this classic theme, mostly thanks to its direct but deft narration and its haunting, adrenaline-pumping plot that sublimely capture the turbulent emotion of each scene. The lead characters – Cal, Andreas, Liridona and Donovan – are also the core strength of the story. Cal, a gifted Hopi NYPD detective, often handles the weird cases but gets his jobs done. This also puts a distance between him and his co-workers. Personality-wise, I find him more interesting than the other leads. Breath of Life bends the polar axis of good and evil into an exciting battle. It’s edgy, exciting and unpredictable, more than enough to make me look forward to Book II.
