Griffin Penshine is given a box of magic pennies and tricked into being a wish stealer. She ponders how to rid herself of the burden and encounters many adventures along the way.
While researching a science project, Griffen, and her partner, Garret, stumble upon ancient alchemy stories. This stimulates Griffin's interest in ridding herself of the cursed pennies. Griffen attempts to reverse the curse of the pennies by bringing good luck to others, hoping to save herself in the process.
The book is appropriate for early middle school children, particularly young girls. There is a great deal of meanness, envy and lesson-learning in the book which may appear a bit preachy to older adolescents.
The major characters are developed as believable, but the reader wants to know more about the emotional make-up of Griffen Penshine. While the plot is well developed, the initial premise is a bit tough to believe, even for those with generous imaginations. Nevertheless, the story is engaging and appealing to girls facing middle school rivalry issues.
