Will of Magic: Chokehold of Darkness is a fantasy book by Peter J. Reurings. In the year 2747, random people all over the world began developing strange abilities, and these abilities were known as magic! A great war was fought after the appearance of magic and there were countless casualties. Mages were branded evil and cursed after the conflict, but they still served as weapons of war. Marshall Kena, serving the nation of Malacia, is a hero on the battlefield but is seen as a devil by the masses because she's a mage. Wielders of magic are vilified by the same people they laid down their lives for and Kena is sick of it. The last major conflict is nearing its end but Kena's fight has just begun. Her fight for freedom.
I enjoyed this book right away and my main reason was the rather unique take on magic. Normally, one comes across classic tropes such as wands, staffs, or incantations but Peter J. Reurings chose to forgo those in favor of his own take on the subject. Fights scenes were always a blast. Seeing how characters would overcome the limitations of their magic, when against a mage that had an advantage, just made the experience even more incredible. I liked the plot a lot. It had some nice twists and turns coupled with multiple schemes by some of the characters. The plot was something of a jigsaw puzzle in a sense in that it kept getting better as more pieces were filled in. The characters were well written too, and my favorite has to be Gregor. His magic, the ability to distort reality, was such a cool thing to picture and his overconfidence was rather endearing. I recommend this marvelous book to readers that love anything with the word magic in it. Seriously, Will of Magic is really good and readers who enjoy films that depict magic will love this book as much as I did.
