Where the Trees Glow: Adventures of the High King by Shauna Lea Freitas is about a young fox named Daisy. Daisy is on a journey to reach the High King who can bestow a blessing on her. She is hoping he will bless her with a friend. While traveling the dark trail on her own, Daisy hears a noise. She meets a young coyote named Lilac, who is also on her way to the High King. Lilac's back leg is injured, and she's hoping the High King can help. They finally reach their destination, but Lilac can't climb to the glowing trees, so Daisy goes alone. What will Daisy find at the top, and will she get her blessing?
Where the Trees Glow: Adventures of the High King has a charming fable-type feel to it. It is delightful to see two young females braving the journey on their own. I enjoyed how Shauna Lea Freitas showcased their pluckiness and resourcefulness as they conquered challenges along the way. The illustrations by Talitha Freitas are sweet. Appropriately, Lilac has a purple bow on her head, and Daisy has a daisy chain collar. The value of friendship and self-sacrifice are also prominent themes. Freitas has written an engaging tale for young people that includes adventure and some character building. Where the Trees Glow: Adventures of the High King is an exciting animal adventure with a satisfying ending. It will be a special read-aloud story for bedtime or any time.
