Where is That Amazingly Delicious, Incredible Avocado? by Kaine and Duds is a silly combination of playground rivalry and yummy snacks. Avocado is a polite, friendly, self-effacing character who is trying to invite the reader to something cool, but can’t get a word in edgewise. His (or her) friends, peanut butter, jam, celery, and apple seem surer of themselves. All of them want to be eaten. I’m not sure I’d like eating avocado with peanut butter, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be friends. Plus, Avocado has friends of his own: chips, chili pepper, tomato, onion, lime, cilantro. They all excel at cool banter and that’s the fun of this story.

Kaine and Duds have a good ear for how popular kids talk to each other. Since I was never a popular kid, it was fun to watch their clever greetings as a call to eat them up. Okay, these characters aren’t children on the playground. They’re foods, snack foods, healthy snack foods to be precise. But they act like the kids who ignored me at school, just as they rudely ignore Avocado, and give him nicknames. The artist gives the rude foods silly faces. Peanut Butter even has a mustache, like the villain that he is. He probably thinks it’s cool. Then again, he thinks being eaten is cool. Since Avocado is food, s/he wants to be eaten, too. I started out wanting to eat all the food. Then I got to know the characters. But I still wanted to eat them. This story is a good opportunity to think about the effects of rudeness as well as enjoy delicious healthy snacks.
