When Jack Trumps Ace by author Debbie De Louise revolves around Jackie Riordan who is the child of a broken marriage. But Jackie's story is not typical for a child in her situation. Her mother is deeply religious, or at least in as much as she expresses her convictions, while her father Jack Riordan – or Jack of Diamonds, as he calls himself – is a jewel thief. When the couple broke up, Jackie decided to stay with her father. Not only stay with him, but to follow in his footsteps by adopting his criminal lifestyle. The story begins during a botched job the two are performing that goes horribly awry. Jackie manages to escape the scene. Her father is shot and killed. Fearful of what will happen to her, Jackie turns to Andrew Miller, a man she's never met before. Ace, as he calls himself, is a long time friend of her father's and has promised to protect his daughter if she ever gets into trouble.
There is much potential in When Jack Trumps Ace, and if you are looking for some light entertainment there is enough to satisfy. Author Debbie De Louise never ventures beyond the type of tried-and-true escapades you expect to see in a typical romantic adventure, but she does it with a flair that keeps you hooked and wondering what's going to happen next. We see everything from Jackie's point of view as she struggles to decide whether Ace is looking out for her or merely playing her along. The story reads fast because it's more of a novella than a novel. So if you have an hour or so to curl up with something entertaining, then When Jack Trumps Ace may be just what you are looking for.
