When Day is Done is a wonderfully written bedtime story where people, the flowers, and the sun have finished for the day. One page at a time, someone or something has completed the day’s work and is ready to say good-night. Even the toys know when day is done. Author Natalee Creech has written a lovely story that sends signals or triggers that the day is done and it’s time to go to sleep. I believe parents will love reading this book with children and letting them know that everything and everyone around them is going to sleep. I think this story will help them let go and fall asleep. When Day is Done is bound to become part of a bedtime routine to be read nightly.
The artwork in When Day is Done is superb! Full, two-page spreads invite the young reader into this warm and loving book, which gently signals that the day is done and it’s time to go to sleep. The illustrations by artist Robert Dunn are well done with soft, pastel colors. The facial expressions, gestures, and actions are accurately portrayed. Watercolor paintings fill the page and invite the reader to escape into the book. Natalee Creech uses rhyming text to gently rock children into slumber. I think children will see the images of sleeping flowers, dogs, and children, and want to go to sleep as well. I think this is a must-have book for every home because it’s destined to become a classic, nighttime ritual.
