Marmaduke the Mole and his wife are expecting a child. They want a bigger home. In fact, they want many children and they want all their children to have their own rooms. Marmaduke the Mole decides he must get a job so he can afford a bigger house. Never mind the obvious questions like how can he afford his current house? Or, hey – he’s a mole – can’t he just dig his house out to make it bigger? This is a world of zany adventures. Marmaduke the Mole goes after the kinds of jobs that humans get. But he’s a mole. He gets hired for an office job. But, moles sleep during the day. He gets fired before he even wakes up. He gets hired to fly a plane, but his eyesight isn’t good enough. Of course, he survives the crash. And, so it goes on until he gets a job digging, which is what he’s good at. It’s a job he loves.
What’s My Job? by Johnny Oddsocks is a silly romp through the world of jobs. The author says his sons are his inspiration. I hope they share his sense of humor. His previous books include What’s My Instrument, about Marilyn the Mongoose who wants to join a band but doesn’t know how to play a musical instrument. And Freddy the Bird, who while flying around looking for friends, must deal with disaster. These stories of mishaps that turn out well are written in rhyme and are accompanied by illustrations, probably also by Johnny Oddsocks. If you and your children like to giggle at predictable mistakes, What’s My Job? will be a welcome addition to your bedtime reading. It may even help children learn to giggle at their own mistakes on their road to finding the best job for them.
