What Do You Notice, Otis? by Joel Kling captures the simple joys of life that are around us through the eyes of Otis, a young goat. He notices the morning light, the gentle breeze that blows, the oak tree’s rough bark; he hears the song of a lark, and many interesting things. He does not like getting wet unless he decides to jump, skip, and run. He likes being quiet and just sitting still. Otis makes readers feel all the sights and sounds around us which usually go unnoticed. The concept of expanding one's awareness of the surroundings have been brought out well by the author through this story.
The concept is good and it is educational to all readers because of its wonderful message for both young and old alike. Often we tend to miss out on observing our surroundings and appreciating the beauty around us. Otis gently reminds readers to be more observant of what is happening around them. The illustrations are adorable and they breathe life into the characters and the scenes. It is a good bedtime storybook and can be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries as it leaves a positive impact on children. Stories like this are good for kids as it encourages them to look around and find joy in the small pleasures of day-to-day life. The story is a fun and simple read and kids will definitely love it!
