Kyle Hemmings has written prose poems that touch on many topics in "Void and Sky". But the reader must spend time musing over each of these prose poems as they are deep and thoughtful, often offering bizarre imagery. In 'Laughing Kite' a woman stands at her mother's grave, bringing flowers and her memories of their relationship. Hemmings writes of having to take his sixteen year old cat, Mr. Tibbs, to be put to sleep. "For his burial, I dressed in bowler hat, neck tie, pinstripe suit and spats. I spent the rest of the afternoon sweeping Mr. Tibbs from under the carpets, the sheets, his hairs clinging to my clothes, the way I once clung to him..." More offbeat is the prose poem 'As If It Never Happened' where a young woman sits on the Tokyo Express mourning the death of her boyfriend who was found dead under a train.
"Void and Sky: A Collection of Prose and Poems" is eclectic prose poetry. Kyle Hemmings writes of Japan in many of his poems and his style of writing, excellent as it is, requires thought on the part of the reader. 'How Mozart Composed the Fifth' is divided into sections named after the famous symphony, allegro con brio, andante con moto, scherzo Allegro, and just Allegro. The reader must be thoughtful and introspective or Kyle Hemmings's prose poems will not touch their lives. "Void and Sky" is for the reader who doesn't mind reading, rereading and thinking about each prose poem over and over.
