Under the Emerald Sky: A Tale of Love and Betrayal in 19th Century Ireland by Juliane Weber is a mesmerizing romance set in historical times. Set in Ireland in 1843, the story follows Quinton Williams, an English nobleman who travels to Ireland to take care of his father’s estate. In Ireland, he meets the young and beautiful Alannah O’Neill, who helps him communicate with the tenants who mostly speak Gaelic. Alannah O’Neill is irresistibly drawn to the handsome Englishman. As their love grows stronger, she knows it can’t be kept secret from a brother who hates the English and represents the faction of society comprising those who want to oust the English from their land. When disaster hits home, can their love be saved?

An intelligently plotted and atmospheric historical novel, Under the Emerald Sky takes readers on a rollicking ride through a turbulent period in Irish history and follows a love that is “forbidden.” The setting is beautifully written and skillfully set at a time in which the Irish experience oppression under English rule and when only a few locals had the privilege of owning their land. The author weaves elements of the Great Famine into the story and skillfully explores its impact on society. The conflict is written on multiple levels, and I adored how the author handled the social and political crisis of the time. Juliane Weber writes believable characters, exploring their humanity and emotions with finesse and exposing inner worlds to which readers can easily connect.
